Alice Liou Biography
Alice Liou is best known for her unique style of watercolor and Sumi paintings. It could be a blue heron flying above the treetop, two humming birds exploring the wisterias, a Northern goshawk feeding her young, or some maple trees glowing on a foggy Autumn morning. Somehow her paintings can touch viewers’ emotions in a mysterious way.
Growing up in Taiwan, Alice studied watercolor, Chinese brush painting (Sumi-e), and Chinese calligraphy under various art masters. She moved to Washington State in 1982 and devoted many years to her education and career. In recent years, she rekindled her passion for art and again studied watercolor, soft pastel, sumi-e, and oil painting with many renowned artists.
Always inspired by the beauty of nature, Alice enjoys creating images that express life’s energy in a variety of forms. Her study of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy also contributed to her art creation process. She strikes to express the essence of the subject while capturing the light and dark aspects in a balanced and harmonious way.
Alice is a member of several artists groups, including the Olympia Art League, Puget Sound Sumi Artists, and the Pacific Gallery Artists. She enjoys learning from other artists as well as sharing her art with others. She has been showing her artworks in solo exhibits, group exhibits, and juried art shows, and has received several awards. She has become one of the popular artists during the annual Olympia Arts Walk. She also enjoys teaching watercolor and sumi classes as well as creating commission artwork.
