The setting for “Gandy Dancer” has been restored! Since its installation in 2000, the original setting of rails and ties had deteriorated. The rails had been stolen, and the rotted ties were removed earlier this year.
“Gandy dancer” was a general term for railroad workers in the 18oo’s. Artist Jim Mattern was inspired by the folklore of workers such as John Henry, and dedicated this sculpture to “the men who worked and died building the Transcontinental Railroad”.
Special thanks to A&K Railroad Materials for their willing help in preparing the supplies, and to Wilco Construction LLC for taking on the unusual job of installation.
